MA Six Shooters Cowboy Mounted Shooting

Hello and welcome to Cowboy Mounted Shooting in Massachusetts! This is one of the most exciting, fastest growing equine sports. Geared for the whole family, adding wild west fun, camaraderie and competition. There are many levels of shooting and riding in Cowboy Mounted Shooting which makes it so appealing to young and old alike. Once you've tried it for the first time, watch out, you're hooked!

Mounted Shooting is like barrel racing with balloons in between the barrels. The rider shoots black powder BLANK cartridges from two .45 caliber pistols, at balloons, and is scored on time and accuracy.

Clothing is 1800's ,as authentic as possible, with a minimum of Cowboy hat, boots, and chaps or chinks.

Guns are two,.45 caliber, single action revolvers, like those of the 1800's. These guns must be cocked each time before firing by drawing the hammer back.

Ammo is a brass cartridge called a .45 caliber Long Colt, is loaded with black powder and has a range of about 15 feet.

Gun leather is a replica of the old style gun rigs. Tack should be made of leather, but cinches and protective gear may be of modern materials.

Saddles of "period" style are encouraged for the enhancement of the sport.

There is NO live ammo allowed at events.

Horses can be of any breed or mule.

There are 50+ possible patterns. They are picked each day by drawing from a hat. Divisions are divided into Mens, Ladies, Seniors, Juniors, and Wranglers. These have 6 classes each. The number of wins a rider has determines the class and how they move up.

Kids under 11 ride the same patterns with a cap gun, and later shoot 5 balloons from the ground with a parent.

Scoring is based on time and accuracy. There is a 5 second penalty for each balloon missed, or a knocked over barrel. There is a 10 second penalty for not following the course correctly, and a 60 second time for falling off, or crossing the timing line before finishing the course.

For a competition card you must join CMSA, WWW.COWBOYMOUNTEDSHOOTING.COM, or ask for an application at one of our events, and we can make you a member that day!
